London, Ontario.
CKaTT's Major Bantam team (boys born
1993 and later) trekked into the Steel City this past weekend and
notched up another deserving medal in the wonderful city of
Hamilton. The team had to play all their 3 games on the Saturday to
qualify for a Gold championship game in the Blessed Sacrament Club's
annual huge tourney.
Coach Glenn
Fernandes noted, "I wanted us to get a feel of what we had
accomplished thus far prior to the finals in London where we will be
aiming for higher berth than last year. This tournament provides the
next best thing with a second chance."
The
Club fought hard through some questionable officiating in its 1st
and 3rd game. The poor results with losses against Whitby Wildcats,
Miss Ballers and Guelph Pheonix were mind boggling even for
Assistant Coach Romy Divina who said: "We just don't get it. They
seem to rattle so easily. They have good fundamentals, good
basketball sense. Looks like they were playing in some sort of
frozen state all weekend." Coach Graydon added, "We
need to bring our intensity, our A-game, our killer instinct. We
can't let teams beat us up on the inside."
Somehow the Team
rallied on the Sunday morning coming out from some lackluster
efforts on Saturday to totally dominate the 2nd half of a lopsided
game against the Oakville Venom on Sunday morning. The Club only
allowed 4 points against them in regulation time, a true testament
to some great defense.
Though they went
down in defeat against the Mississauga Ballers by 10 points in the
Championship game on the same Sunday afternoon, it was a great all
around effort and a wonderful time of team bonding for the whole
team in general from the players up to the coaches and parents who
were able to accompany the team.
Coach Glenn
chuckled, "Although the gold was attainable, it would seem that
silver looks nicer with our CKaTT blue uniforms." Coach Romy
added, "There is the biggest challenge in less than 3 weeks and
to be honest if we are to contend with other championship teams we
need to have a combined effort as a team to move forward."
The team is now
preparing to blow into the quiet town of London for the Ontario Cup
in less than 3 weeks where over 100 Major Bantam teams will compete
in battle for 3 straight days.
